East Durham Community Athletics Track
Since 2010, Sedgefield Harriers has been involved in a project to develop a local track and field facility for club members and other community groups to use. Working in partnership with stakeholder organisations on a steering group, our aspiration is to establish the track on the northern edge of Sedgefield, on Durham County Council land that is part of the NETPark site. The East Durham Community Athletics Track (EDCAT) will provide much needed facilities for all ages and abilities from communities throughout East Durham.
Inevitably, for a project of this scale, there are many stages, from the initial idea, through to the moment when there is a track in place that can be used, with numerous hurdles to clear along the way. Happily, huge progress has been made since the idea was first introduced and the steering group is optimistic that, subject to a successful planning application, work on the facility can begin in 2021. The club and other partners have raised funds that will allow the first phase of the project to proceed, which is exciting for all involved. To fully realise the EDCAT vision, the steering group will continue to explore additional funding options and the club will actively support that work.
